Description
Philipponnat Blanc de Noir
Ultimate expression of the finest Champagne terroirs, particularly Ay, mareuil-sur-Ay and the Côte des Blancs, exclusively in Premiers and Grands Crus, Philipponnat vintage cuvees illustrate the particular character of each year, taking only the very best grapes from the harvest
This Blanc de Noirs demonstrates Philipponnat’s expertise in blending and vinifying Pinot Noir. The wine is made exclusively from first press juice and the grapes are sourced from Grand and 1er cru vineyards in Montagne de Reims, as well as Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay. 2018 was one of the driest summers on record and the favorable conditions produced a complex and generous wine with a fresh and elegant finish.
Expressive violet, acacia blossom, apricot and red berry aromas precede an elegant and sumptuous palate of forest fruits and spices.
About: Philipponnat is a historic French Champagne house owned by the family of the same name. The Philipponnat’s wine history in the region dates back to the 16th Century when they were growers and merchants, supplying wine to the court of Louis XIV. The company’s 18th Century cellars were part of the Château de Mareuil.
Philipponnat is particularly known for the Clos des Goisses vintage deluxe cuvées (brut and rosé), produced from and named for a 5.5 hectare (13.6 acre) walled vineyard. Here, an unshaded 45-degree slope facing due south is regarded to provide the region’s warmest terroir allowing the grapes to achieve maximal ripening potential.
The house’s single plot cuvées are a trio sourced from Premier or Grand Cru plots at Le Léon in Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay and Clos des Goisse. These vintage blanc de blancs have been aged for at least seven years prior to release. The collection also includes the Royale Réserve non-vintage line and a broad selection of styles of vintage wines.
In the cellar, Philipponnat uses a form of solera system of aging for the reserve wine component of its non-vintage blends, blending a quarter to one-third of the barrel-aged reserve wine with the current year’s production, and retaining a portion of this blend to form the reserve wine for the following year. The house claims to be the first to indicate on the back label the main year used in the non-vintage blends, along with the dosage level and date of disgorgement.
